The New York Jets have a new quarterback, and last year he was with the Las Vegas Raiders. That would be Geno Smith, and some of the comments that are coming out about Smith will sound decidedly unfamiliar to Raiders fans.
The commenter was Jets offensive coordinator Franch Reich, and his quotes and comments were picked up by Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk.
The bet here is that pairing Reich with Smith can help Smith replicate some of the early success he had with the Raiders last year, and Reich says he’s been “just so impressed" with Smith’s preparation communication and football IQ in their short time working together, according to
“I’ve been around a lot of really smart and good,” Reich said, via the team’s website. “All I’m going to say is we’re in good shape. We’ve got a lot to prove, he’s got a lot to prove, I do, we all do. We understand that, we understand what world we live in. But it’s been good so far.”
Smith was the opposite of smart and good last year, and Reich is about to get a serious reality check. The former Raiders quarterback has a habit of holding on to the ball too allow his receivers to some open, and on teams like the Raiders and Jets that can be deadly.
In theory, though, the Jets do have some weapons to go with Smith. Breece Hall is a quality back who made the odd decision to re-sign with the Jets, proving that money trumps all in the NFL, and Garrett Wilson is a good receiver who’s been endlessly frustrated by his quarterbacks’ inability to get the ball to him.
That endlessness should continue this season with Smith taking snaps. The Jets wound up with Smith for two reasons: (1) he came cheap at $18 million, with the Raiders paying for nearly all of that, and (2) there was no rookie quarterback worth drafting in the first round for any team other than the Raiders, who of course took Fernando Mendoza.
It’s an unfortunate development for Jets fans. They now get to relive the experience Raiders fans had last year, which was beyond ugly. Then again, Jets fans are used to this sort of thing, so at least they know what’s coming. Meanwhile, the Raiders have moved on to formulate a genuine quarterback plan, although that’s not necessarily going to work in the NFL given the reputation the Raiders have acquired.
