For the first time in 53 years, the New York Knicks are NBA champions after defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 on Saturday night. Led by Finals MVP Jalen Brunson and a strong supporting cast, the Knicks finally reached the mountaintop as they became the 8th different champion in the past eight years in the NBA.
The Philadelphia 76ers have a couple of ties to the Knicks as former draft pick Landry Shamet was a big part of the rotation and franchise legend Mo Cheeks was featured on the coaching staff. Shamet, especially, has had a wild ride to the Knicks and to be a champion as the Sixers sent him to the Los Angeles Clippers in his rookie season in the Tobias Harris deal and he then bounced around and was on a non-guaranteed deal with New York earlier in the 2025-26 season.
After winning the title, the former Sixers guard sent an NSFW message on Instagram in his reaction to winning his first NBA championship about perseverance and never giving up.
