Fall River fans pick their favorite high school athletes in polls

FALL RIVER — The Herald News recently concluded voting for Players of the Year polls.

The two-week polls wrapped up and the fan's choice votes are in for baseball, softball, lacrosse, boys and girls tennis.

Here are the winners for their respected sports below:

BASEBALL​

Jackson Chase, Westport​

47.43% of the vote (484 votes)

The Westport sophomore catcher was named a Mayflower Athletic Conference Comprehensive All-Star. He batted .396 with 19 hits, a home run, 17 RBIs and scored 19 runs. Chase was named a Herald News All-Scholastic first team.

Runner up: Brady Cambra, Atlantis Charter; Owen DoRego, Diman

SOFTBALL​

Ava Cartin, Diman​

87.99% of the vote (2,827)

Cartin batted .367 with a home run, 2 triples, 4 doubles, and 17 RBIs. She had a slugging percentage of .592. Cartin faced 152 batters, fanning 35 and allowing just seven walks. She was a Herald News second team All-Scholastics.

Runner up: Tatum Swanson, SBR; Loralei Shields, Diman

BOYS LACROSSE​

Gavin Rodrigues, Somerset Berkley​

39.44% of the vote (28)

Rodrigues scored an area-best 50 goals and had 25 assists after being moved from defense to offense. He also contributed 80 ground balls, 70 breakups. Rodrigues was named the Herald News Lacrosse Player of the Year.

Runner up: Chace Lyons, Somerset Berkley; Andre Jusseaume, Westport

GIRLS LACROSSE​

Abigail Vallas, Joseph Case​

35.21% of the vote (25)

The Cardinal junior midfielder took 19 shots, scored 5 goals, 3 free positions, 4 caused turnovers, 11 ground balls, 3 interceptions and 21 draw controls. She was named a Herald News second team All-Scholastics.

Runner up: Lauren Carr, Somerset Berkley; Skyler Rivers, Somerset Berkley

BOYS TENNIS​

Brayden Dorego, Somerset Berkley​

62.10% of the vote (444)

The SBR senior co-captain had an area-best 15-3 record at second singles and was 7-0 against Greater Fall River opponents. He was named the Herald News Boys Tennis Player of the Year.

Runner up: Owen Borges, Joseph Case; Ryan Charest, Somerset Berkley

GIRLS TENNIS​

Maura Kennedy, Somerset Berkley​

40.26% of the vote (31)

The SBR junior was named a South Coast Conference All-Star. She finished with a 15-2 record at first doubles. Kennedy, who was named a Herald News All-Scholastics first team, helped lead the Raiders to a 12-6 record.

Runner up: Allexandra Farias, Durfee; Maddie Melnyk, Westport
