With the constant injuries to Ellington and not thinking CJ will be back, RB may be in the works for the Cards come draft day. Walter mentioned EE as a possible #1 pick for the Cards a few weeks ago and I disagreed.

However, over the Thanksgiving day weekend I talked to my scout friend about Elliot and he really likes him and thinks he's the real deal. He's not in Todd Gurley's class but still a very good prospect that is 1st round worthy. He has excellent size/speed combo.

I think EE is a good back but I have my reservations about him. Much like Gordon, I think Elliot is more a product of the holes developed by the OL. He has some wiggle but I wouldn't call him evasive by any means. He runs with good power and often makes the first guy miss but that's not because of his elusiveness and more just being stronger. That's not going to be the case in the NFL. Also, during the Michigan game, they showed a stat where OSU RB's(basically EE) were 1st in the country of yards downfield by RB's before engaging in first contact with defense.

There are a bunch of good RB's that are going to be in the draft this year with EE likely being the first off the board. I know a lot of people will want us to take him but I'd rather wait and get a guy later. My favorite is the kid from Indiana, Jordan Howard. He's a junior at 6'1 230 and is a monster. However, I don't see him on a lot of pre-daft rankings but that may be because it's his 1st year at Indiana after transferring from UAB.

EE is ok but not a world beater by any means. I see us potentially taking a RB in the mid rounds (3-4) much like this past draft. I wouldn't spend a 1st on a RB unless another Gurley shows up. Also, if we don't address LB (Inside or Outside) in the first round I'm gonna :puke

We have so much bigger needs than RB in the 1st round. There is no need to reach on a RB when we are of DESPERATE need of a ILB IMHO.

AND OLB.

I'll throw my TV out the window if we ignore BOTH of those positions again.

I don't think we have ignored it the past 2 years just the good ones got snapped up before our pick. The only solution is trading up but that likely means you only get one of the two positions instead of both

I agree to an extent, I have made this same argument before but Cheese raised a good point a while back about how the Cardinals need to learn that if they really like a guy and are close, maybe it's time to start being proactive instead of just praying they fall to us, i.e., Bud Dupree.

Probably could have moved up a few spots for next to nothing and gotten the LB we desperately needed instead of the Tackle who is warming the bench.

It's all hindsight now but I do think that it's a good point. We're not in perpetual rebuilding mode anymore so next time we see a difference maker we need to try to go get em.

The only problem with the logic is it assumes we didn't attempt to move up and it didn't work out or teams wanted more than next to nothing.

What is the history of much better than average (and or great) LB's taken after the first round in the last 10 years or so?

I can't wait until the 2017 draft when Dalvin Cook, Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette will be available!

1. I doubt he'll be available when the Cards pick, but even if he is, I think the Cards go LB, if there is one, with a first round grade, available. One thing that Gurley's success has brought into style is that RB's can be drafted in the first round.

I do not think he will be around when we draft in the 1st rd. I also think ILB is our number #priority.

Linebackers, then a DB, then a star level TE, then maybe RB. But also we have to be shopping for a QBOF right now. If we wait until Palmer retires, we will be right where we were after Warner hung them up.

OLB, ILB, C

If it isn't one of those positions (despite being late in the first round), I will be disappointed.

It's interesting bc in Mitch's earlier thread about taking a back with a first round selection I poo-poo'ed the idea. Now seeing CJ slow considerably (even prior to the injury) and recognizing ellingtons injury shortcomings I can't be so definitive.

That said, I still can't see them going RB in round 1. Not with need at ILB, the perennial need at olb (I feel my iPhone should have that as an autocorrect by now with how often I type we need to draft an olb high), cornerback and QBOF. And having just selected DJ with a third round pick is be surprised if they wanted to rely on two young guys (really three when you consider how young and relatively inexperienced Ellington kinda is with all the missed games). I think we can rather expect another mendenhall, Dwyer, CJ type signing for depth.

All that said, if there aren't any good pass rushers it dynamic cbs or ilbs, or intriguing QBOF that fell to us, I'd live to take a flyer on that RB from Alabama. He might be Trent Richardson, but I think he's more. He's a big kid and total bull. He'd give this offense a physical presence it doesn't currently possess (DJ isn't really a punishing runner). A DJ, Alabama (can't remember his name, Derrick something), AE backfield is deep, versatile and provides true change of pace opportunities.

Picking 32nd means more money available for a quality free agent to address a need. :D
