Elliot Anderson featured as England beat Panama 2-0 on Saturday in his first display since Manchester City agreed a £116million fee to sign him from Nottingham Forest.

Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane scored for the Three Lions, who were far from at their best on the night.

Thomas Tuchel's side will now progress to the World Cup round of 32, after topping group L.

Anderson is expected to sign a five-year deal with the option of an additional year, with a fee finally agreed for Man City's top target.

Nottingham Forest had been determined to hold out for more up front when they rejected an opening bid worth £120m earlier this month.

Decision-makers at the City Ground have proven successful in that aim, with the entirety of the £116m guaranteed.

Premier League fans left unimpressed by Elliot Anderson
Anderson's move to Man City has not quite broken the Premier League record, but he has become the most expensive English player ever.

He has also become Man City's most expensive-ever signing, and for many, it is clear why.

The 23-year-old is a staggeringly good ball-winner, and a constantly-active presence in the midfield.

Against Panama, Anderson completed two successful dribbles and 11 passes into the final third, winning three free-kicks and even attempting five crosses.

It was his defensive work that impressed, however. The midfielder made two tackles, two interceptions, seven recoveries and won nine duels.

But not all fans are convinced by Anderson's price tag, and many expressed their confusion on Saturday.

"Elliot Anderson is a nice tidy player but never in a million years is he worth £116m," said one fan. Another described him as "massively overrated".

Elliot Anderson out of possession is genuinely a cone. He's always positioning so badly?

Elliot Anderson is a £130m midfielder who can't control the tempo of a game, change its rhythm or consistently get the weight of his passes right. Those are midfield fundamentals.

Premier League record signing Elliot Anderson can't assert himself against Ghana and Panama.

Nobody can tell me what he's good at.

Manchester City have officially destroyed the market.

Elliot Anderson's a good player but he's a £50m player at best. Massively overrated

Elliot Anderson apparently being a 100 million pound + player, is a really scary thought for where football is headed.

How the hell is Elliot Anderson rated over £100m

Social media user Leah said the new Man City man's price is a "really scary thought for where football is headed".

Sharing the pitch with Anderson was Bellingham, who cost Real Madrid up to £115m when he joined in 2023.

If the new Man City man was an example of how prices have got out of hand, Bellingham's display suggested that his was warranted.

The midfielder opened the scoring and provided the cross for England's second, proving a constant threat throughout the game.

Bellingham created four chances, completed three dribbles and won four free-kicks.

And that is not all - he won 11 duels on the night, completed four tackles and made a staggering seven recoveries.

Anderson will need to prove his fee next season, as Bellingham almost certainly has.
