The Boston Celtics head into the offseason armed with the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, a sizable traded player exception and a handful of tradeable contracts. Both the point guard and center positions are areas of need, having been exposed during the team's opening round exit from the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
As such, Brad Stevens is expected to be busy during the offseason. He'll have some tough decisions to make, and that includes whether to hand Jaylen Brown and/or Payton Pritchard a contract extension. It's also worth noting that should Boston use either their mid-level exception or traded player exception, the franchise will become hard-capped at the first apron.
To make sense of the Celtics current situation, Adam Taylor of The Celtics Chronicle podcast was joined by Third Apron's Yossi Gozlan, who is a salary cap expert. During their discussion, Yossi detailed Boston's current financial situation, why this summer is imperative for the Celtics to improve the roster, and how remaining out of the luxury tax can set the franchise up for bigger spending years in the near future.
