Welcome to Tuesday A’s fans!
The squad began the year with a clean bill of health over the first couple of months of the season. Since then they’ve been absolutely ravaged by injuries with just about every starter spending time on the IL at one point or another. Injuries are apart of the game but this has been a shockingly high number of injuries either way you slice it. Well we got a trove of information regarding some of the players currently on the injured list.
First and foremost, All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers is set to undergo surgery today on that right knee of his:
The recovery timeline for a meniscus tear varies but the consensus is usually 6-8 weeks before a player is ready to return. That said catcher is a position where you have to constantly be squatting and need a 100% healthy knee. It’d be a shock to see him return this year. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez suffered a similar injury and returned after four weeks earlier this season, but that was for a partial and not full tear.
That’s not the only health update for the Athletics. There was a health information dump yesterday courtesy of beat writer Martin Gallegos, updating us on most of the guys currently on the IL:
It sounds as if Zack Gelof may be nearing his rehab assignment soon. Gelof had been having a great rebound year before his recent injuries and he’ll be hoping to continue that when he returns. What his role will be with the club next year will depend greatly on how he’s used over the final couple months and it sounds like we aren’t too far off from seeing him back on the field. Thing’s aren’t looking as promising for Joshua Kuroda-Grauer after his recent surgery, and honestly, every man will understand if he’s out for a while. There isn’t much of a precedent for his injury so we’ll have to continue to keep an eye on how he progresses.
Denzel Clarke meanwhile has been on the shelf longer than anybody else. After initially being placed on the 10-day IL with a bone bruise in his foot way back on April 22nd, he’s since suffered a hamstring strain that’s kept him on the shelf way longer than expected. It sounds as if he’s finally making progress though. What his role will be moving forward will be another interesting storyline to watch as Henry Bolte has seemingly taken the lead for the long-term center field job (though his recent struggles are opening a door for Clarke when he returns).
Hearing Ginn is already throwing off a mound is a sign of relief after he landed on the shelf with a blister. Those things can linger with certain pitchers but it sounds like Ginn isn’t one of those unlucky few. He shouldn’t be too far off from a return and may not even need a rehab assignment. The same can’t be said for Luis Severino, who’s been out since May 30th. The throwing progression is a good step but he has a long road ahead and with two months to go there’s a chance he may not pitch again for the big league team this year. Ideally the club would like to get him back for at least a start or two just to prove that he’s healthy going into the offseason but we’ll see if they push the envelope with the veteran right-hander with a long injury history.
In the bullpen, the A’s have some good news, bad news. Offseason acquisition Mark Leiter Jr. will have hip surgery tomorrow as well, likely ending his lone year with the Athletics. The 35-year-old will end his season with a 4.28 ERA in 36 games for the A’s. Not what the A’s were hoping for when they gave him $2.8 million this offseason. On the other hand it sounds like righty Justin Sterner is making progress and we should almost certainly see him again before the season is out. His 6.12 ERA on the year is a bit misleading after he allowed 11 runs in his final three appearances. We can blame the knee injury for that.
As for Sunday’s starter Jeffrey Springs, it seems he and the A’s dodged a bullet and he’s healthy enough to make his next scheduled start:
There’s no reason that shouldn’t be his final game in an Athletics uniform. After a hot start to the year Springs has been among the worst pitchers in the sport. Still, pitching is always at a premium and the club could likely find someone if he pitches well against the Tigers later this week.
