Ed McCaffrey, who won three Super Bowls during his 13-year NFL career, believes the Denver Broncos "hit it out of the park" when they picked quarterback Bo Nix in the 2024 NFL draft.
“I see a strong arm,” McCaffrey said during a recent interview with RG.org's DJ Siddiqi. “I see incredible accuracy, really good footwork. He doesn’t take a lot of sacks, one of the least sacked quarterbacks in the league. That was something that Sean Payton emphasized before last season. I think they accomplished that.”
Nix was invited to the Pro Bowl as an alternate last season after totaling 4,207 yards from scrimmage and scoring 34 touchdowns as a rookie (he declined the Pro Bowl nod due to injury). One of Nix's strengths was avoiding negative plays -- his TD to INT ratio was 29 to 12, and he only took 24 sacks, fewer than 23 other QBs last fall.
McCaffrey, who won his first Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers before following Mike Shanahan to the Broncos, believes Nix is a perfect fit for Payton's offense.
“Sean Payton knows where he wants his quarterback to go with the football,” McCaffrey told Siddiqi. "When he calls the play, he wants the quarterback to see the field the way he sees it. Bo Nix does that this way, that’s why Payton likes him so much, so they’ll continue to work with him and the rest of the team."
Nix went 10-7 as a starter last fall and Denver reached the playoffs for the first time since their Super Bowl-winning campaign in 2015. Now entering Year 2 in the NFL and his second season with Payton, Nix will aim to take another step forward in 2025.
"[H]e’s the guy Sean Payton wants taking snaps," McCaffrey said. "He sees the field the way Coach Payton sees it.”
