Three teams are in the thick of the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division boys basketball race.
Two — Geneva and Edgewood — are scheduled to play Friday at EHS.
The Eagles lead the conference at 4-1, followed by Lakeside at 4-2. The Warriors check in with a 3-2 mark.
“They have just as good team as us,” Edgewood coach Jay Bowler said of Geneva. “They have a lot of guys who can play.”
Geneva (7-4 overall) won the first meeting 75-63 on Dec. 13.
Eagles coach Connor Zimmer said his team will move on to their marquee rematch Friday night, but there were some lessons to be learned from a Tuesday loss to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin.
“We knew coming into this game it would be a tough one,” Zimmer said. “We know how Edgewood plays, we always say this game is over. We know Edgewood is going to be ready to fight with us, we have to be prepared.”
Zimmer said Edgewood (6-5 overall) is a much different team since their first meeting, but so are the Eagles.
“We’re a totally different team,” the coach said. “I believe so much in my team. We believe in our culture that we’ve created, just being relentless out there, competing at the highest level. I have a high level of confidence in my team. We’re on top in the conference for a reason. All the pressure is on us and we like it that way.”
Both teams enter Friday’s game coming off losses.
On Tuesday night, the Warriors dropped a 64-47 decision to West Geauga.
Edgewood had trouble getting going from the start, scoring its first point at the 3:35 mark. The first basket was with 2:10 left in the opening quarter.
The Warriors drew to within 19-18 in the second quarter, and trailed 27-20 at halftime.
A Zar Triplin basket cut the deficit to 27-22 early in the third quarter, but the Wolverines went on a run and kept increasing the lead.
“WG took us out a lot of our stuff,” Bowler said. “There’s nights we’re not making shots, so we have to rebound.”
Logan Mezak paced the Warriors with 17 points, which included five 3-pointers and two free throws.
Meanwhile, the Eagles lost to NDCL 76-62 Tuesday night.
The Lions had a 52-27 rebounding advantage, including 27 on offensive.
For Geneva, Caden Proy tossed in 33 points and Nate Csiszar contributed 11.
The Dragons (6-7 overall) are scheduled to play at Jefferson (4-6, 3-3) Friday night
