ASHTABULA TOWNSHIP — The Edgewood Warriors built a 21-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back in a 71-28 win over the Conneaut Spartans in Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division play Saturday.

Senior Logan Mezak led Edgewood in scoring with 21 points and sophomore Dallas Patterson added 20.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the conference. The Spartans dropped to 1-2 overall and 0-1.

“I think we just played good team ball, and we really needed this win,” Mezak said. “I feel like we were a little bit more confident in this game.”

The Warriors pressured Conneaut ball-handlers throughout the game and forced turnovers that led to easy baskets in transition.

“That’s how we try to play the majority of games, try to speed up the teams,” Mezak said.

Edgewood coach Jay Bowler said Mezak and Patterson help the Warriors have a balanced attack that doesn’t rely on just one player to carry the team.

“Logan’s very, very good,” Bowler said. “When he’s making those shots and getting to the paint, making kicks, when he makes a couple threes, it opens it up for everybody else, because he gets so much attention.

“And he does a great job of finding an open man, which is awesome.”

Senior Geno Measel added 11 points for the Warriors.

“We’re a tough team to scout because it can be anybody’s night,” Bowler said.

With the pressure defense being effective against the Spartans, Edgewood was able to play the style it wanted to, which helped open up the offense.

“When we can get out and run and get some stops defensively and get out and transition, we do play our best,” Bowler said.

After the Warriors took a 5-4 lead, Edgewood outscored the Spartans 24-4 to finish the first quarter with a 29-8 lead.

Edgewood kept the pressure on and continued to build its lead in the second quarter taking a 47-17 lead into the locker room. The Warriors then held a 64-26 advantage after the third quarter.

Senior Jayden Hook led Conneaut with 13 points. Juniors Alden Gouge and Yadiel Perales Cruz added four points each.

Conneaut coach Joe Dunn was disappointed with his team’s effort.

“We’re gonna struggle with offense,” he said. “Defensive-wise, we need to get better. I mean, we just need to get better.”

Rebuilding a team is a lot of effort, Dunn said.

“So we’re still around year two of it, and we’re just going to keep trying to rebuild it and rebuild the culture and mindsets and just continue to get better,” he said.

Edgewood shot 24-for-59 (40.68%) from the field and 13 of 20 (65%) from the charity stripe. Conneaut made 9 shots out of 30 (30%) and shot 5-for-12 (41.67%) from the free-throw line.

The Warriors held a 23-15 rebounding advantage over the Spartans.

Conneaut hosts Maplewood tonight, while Edgewood visits St. John Saturday. Both are non-conference games.
