Fall sports are fast approaching.

In just a couple of weeks, teams in the seven sports – cross country, football, boys golf, girls golf, boys soccer and girls tennis — will be get to work preparing for competition over the next few months.

Both the Chagrin Valley Conference and Northeastern Athletic Conference have changes entering this school year.

The CVC has added four schools, while the NAC is bringing in one.

Chardon, North, South and Fairport Harding joined the CVC.

“The Chagrin Valley Conference utilizes an objective, bylaw-driven formula to determine divisional alignment for high school football,” CVC Commissioner Donald P. Lewis Jr. said in an email concerning football. “As approved through the conference bylaw amendment adopted in November 2025 under Article X, Section 7 – Alignment for HS Football, divisional alignment is based on the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) Competitive Balance calculations as implemented by the OHSAA.

“The Chagrin Valley Conference will use the Spring 2024 OHSAA Competitive Balance numbers for the 2026 football season. Thereafter, divisional alignment will follow a two-year rotation, with a review and any necessary adjustments based on the Spring 2026 OHSAA Competitive Balance numbers for implementation beginning with the 2027 football season. The bylaws also provide flexibility for schools that wish to compete at a higher level. A team assigned to a smaller division may request to move to a larger division.”

Lewis, in the email, said if a vacancy exists in a lower division, the opportunity to move down will first be offered to the team with the lowest competitive balance number in the higher division.

“If that school declines, the opportunity will be offered to the team with the next lowest competitive balance number, and the process will continue until a team accepts,” he said. “If no school volunteers to move down after the process has been completed throughout the division, all teams will remain in their current divisional alignments.

“This process ensures that football divisional alignment is determined through a transparent, objective, and consistent methodology based on the OHSAA competitive balance system while providing schools with limited flexibility when appropriate.”

Leetonia replaces Fairport in the NAC.

“The NAC principals all discuss and decide on the divisions, and then it is voted on and put in our by-laws,” NAC Commissioner Mel Nowakowski said. “Starting in 2027-28, we have new divisions with the new schools coming in. The divisions are not based solely on enrollment or geography, but both are discussed.”

Starting next school year, Brookfield, Champion, Labrae and Liberty will join the conference from the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference.
