CONNEAUT — Senior Deven Christine came off the bench to score 20 points and help Edgewood earn a 67-47 Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division boys basketball win Friday over Conneaut.

With the win, the Warriors improved to 8-8 overall and 4-4 in the conference. The Spartans dropped to 1-12 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

Senior Logan Mezak had 13 points for the Warriors, and classmate Dez Triplin added 12.

The game was close throughout most of the first half.

The Spartans took a 9-8 lead with 2:04 remaining in the first quarter after senior Jayden Hook scored on a three-point play off a layup in transition.

But Edgewood senior Geno Measel hit a 3-pointer with 36 seconds left in the quarter, and the Warriors scored again as part of a 5-0 run to take a 13-9 lead and close out the first quarter.

Conneaut kept it close and had a chance to cut the deficit, as the Warriors led 27-22 with less than two minutes to go before halftime, but couldn’t connect on a pair of free throws.

Edgewood hit a 3-pointer, then had two consecutive steals off inbound passes after making baskets to finish the half with an 11-0 run to take a 38-22 lead into the locker room.

“It was just our hustle and just our defense and just the intensity,” said Christine said. “Geno and Dezarion, those two guys really get out and get after it, and Logan especially.

“And Paul [Siler], he gets the dirty work stuff done down in the paint and gets our rebounds and he helps us with that also. I give them all credit to all of the success during that quarter.”

Conneaut regrouped after halftime and outscored the Warriors 15-13 in the third quarter.

The Spartans cut it down to nine points early in the fourth quarter when junior Alden Goudge made a free throw to make it 51-42 with about six minutes to go.

But Christine scored on a layup in transition to put the Warriors back up by double digits.

Conneaut never got any closer as Edgewood finished the game with a 14-5 run.

Christine was pleased to get a win for the Warriors’ final regular-season road game.

“I think this is going to help us focus onto other games,” he said.

Edgewood coach Jay Bowler said the game plan was to speed up the Spartans as much as possible.

“That kind of slowly wore them down in the last minute of the second quarter, which definitely helped to at least get us some breathing room for the rest of the way,” Bowler said.

The ability of the Warriors to close out quarters well was big key for the game, he said.

“If you break it down, the last couple minutes of the quarters, that’s where the whole game was,” Bowler said. “Conneaut played a great game, they beat us in the third quarter. You take out that two minutes in the second quarter and it’s very close.”

Bowler hopes the win will be a springboard for the Warriors as they finish the regular season.

Hook led the Spartans with 17 points and Goudge added 10.

Conneaut coach Joe Dunn said his team didn’t keep its composure right before halftime.

“We lost our heads a little bit, and five straight turnovers turned into what was a seven-point lead to a 16-point lead, and going into halftime, our kids looked defeated,” Dunn said. “They came out and they continued to battle, which we always do, brought it back to about nine [points down], and again, we just let the other team run away with it.”

Dunn thought turnovers proved to be the difference for his team.

“We’re young and inexperienced, and when close games against good teams come up, it shows how inexperienced we are. I think just taking care of the ball was our biggest issue,” he said.

Edgewood shot 27-for-63 (42.86%) from the field and 8 of 20 (40%) from the charity stripe.

Conneaut made 17 shots out 47 (36.17%) and went 10-for-27 (37.03%) from the free-throw line.

The Spartans held a 38-33 rebounding advantage over the Warriors.

Edgewood hosts Chardon Wednesday, while Conneaut visits St. John today.
