The Philadelphia Eagles may have to wait a little longer before seeing one of their biggest offseason acquisitions back on the practice field.

Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio provided an update Tuesday on outside linebacker Jonathan Greenard, indicating the veteran pass rusher is still several weeks away from returning as he continues recovering from a pectoral injury.

“We ain’t going to see him for another couple weeks, at least,” Fangio said.

Greenard was placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list in late July after suffering what the Eagles described as a pec strain during a weightlifting session before the start of training camp. While the injury isn’t expected to threaten his availability for the regular season, the extended absence has delayed his opportunity to build chemistry with his new teammates.

Philadelphia invested heavily to acquire Greenard this offseason, sending two third-round draft picks—including the No. 98 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft and a 2027 third-round pick—to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Eagles then doubled down on their commitment by signing Greenard to a lucrative four-year, $100 million contract extension that includes $50 million in guaranteed money, signaling their belief that he can become a cornerstone of the defense for years to come.

Biggest defensive addition still weeks away​

Once healthy, Greenard is expected to step into a starting role opposite one of the league’s deepest edge-rushing rotations.

The Eagles’ outside linebacker group features promising young talent, including Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt, along with veterans AJ Epenesa and Arnold Ebiketie. Hunt, in particular, has turned heads throughout training camp with his consistent play and has taken advantage of Greenard’s absence by earning additional first-team reps.

Philadelphia remains confident Greenard will make an impact once he returns, but the organization also understands there’s no reason to rush one of its premier defensive playmakers back before he’s fully healthy.

With Super Bowl expectations once again surrounding the Eagles, ensuring Greenard is ready for the regular season remains the top priority. In the meantime, Philadelphia’s young pass rushers will continue receiving valuable opportunities to prove they belong in Fangio’s defensive rotation.
