After experiencing multiple coaching changes throughout his NFL career, new Ravens tight end Durham Smythe said one thing immediately stood out about Jesse Minter and Baltimore's new coaching staff. During an appearance on The Lounge with Ryan Mink and Garrett Downing, Smythe explained that the coaching staff has done a strong job balancing accountability with player relationships.

According to Smythe, successful coaching transitions always start with establishing expectations immediately.

“It’s establishing the culture, establishing what’s acceptable.”

But Smythe believes Baltimore's staff has handled that process without creating unnecessary distance between coaches and players.

“They do a great job of having a connection with the players while also making it very clear what the standard is every day.”

Smythe also acknowledged how difficult that balance can be for new coaching staff.

“There’s a fine line to that. You go too far one way and players are kind of doing whatever they want. You go too far the other way and everyone’s like, ‘Wow, this guy is tough to be around.’”

According to Smythe, the Ravens’ staff has found the right middle ground early in the process.

“There’s a skill to it, and I think Jesse and the staff have done a great job of that.”
