There has to be a back story that we're not getting.
A guy who was an admitted "Cardinal diehard" before he was drafted here doesn't suddenly opt out of signing his tender and not show up at voluntary workouts unless something (more than standard agent/negotiations crap) is really bothering him.
But regardless of what's going on inside of Deuce's head - his holdout logically greased the way for us to sign Faneca (and/or Hadnot earlier) if for no other reason than for "Deuce insurance" and what this has done is to create a logjam at both guard positions.
This, in turn, figures to make it more tempting for the Cardinal FO to explore trade possibilities that would have us part with one of our surplus offensive linemen in exchange for a veteran cover-corner, inside LB or TE.
This is when your GM says something along the lines of: "Football is a business/nothing personal." I think that's true. The situation becomes less one of whether Deuce or Reggie or anyone else is or isn't a good guy - it's just the way the dominos are falling.
Best post of the day!
Think of it this way. Has Deuce been paying attention?
Who gets the good new contracts with the Cardinals?
The good soldiers who show up and work hard and don't complain...see Adrian Wilson.
It makes me wonder whether Deuce simply wants out of Arizona.
This whole scenario is bizarre.
That said, it also makes me very curious as to why the Cardinals have not made any moves to agree to new contracts with any of their 4 year vets who are qualified to become UFAs next year.
That obviously includes Steve Breaston.
Add Ben Patick, Gabe Watson and Alan Branch to that list.
It's very strange, especially in a no cap year.
The message clearly is: none of these guys are considered "core."
Do you think any of these guys are deserving of new contracts?
I do.
I'd like them all to be re-signed.
But, I guess the Cardinals still think they can strike deals with players headed into the UFA world.
