Early in March, the Oregon Ducks locked in an official visit with 2027 four-star linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield on June 5. Nearly a month later, Mayfield has targeted a commitment date, revealing that he'll choose his collegiate program on July 17.
That July date comes after he's scheduled for official visits with Indiana (April 17), Miami (May 29), Georgia (June 12) and Kentucky (June 19) — all of which are included in the standout linebackers' list of the final five finalists alongside Oregon.
The effort to reel in the commitment of Mayfield is well worth it, as he's the No. 18 linebacker and No. 207 player nationally, per 247 Sports Composite. He competes for Lincolnton High School in North Carolina, where he's the eighth-ranked player in the state.
As a sophomore in 2024, Mayfield totaled 109 tackles, 19 tackles for loss and 10 sacks, dominating the competition and solidifying himself as one of the top players at his position in the class.
As for what the 6-foot-1, 215-pounder is looking for with the program that he chooses, Mayfield cited relationships and the ability to help him reach his high-end goals as a main proponent.
"The schools I have the best relationships with stand out a little,” he told Rivals' Hunter Shelton. "Relationships and their philosophy are important to me. My end goal is to be the best linebacker ever."
With just three defensive commits thus far — four-star defensive lineman Zane Rowe, four-star edge rusher Cameron Pritchett and three-star linebacker Sam Ngata — the importance of adding Mayfield has to be near the top of the list for head coach Dan Lanning and defensive coordinator Chris Hampton regarding the 2027 recruiting class.
