In addition to those schools, Mayfield had nearly 30 other schools courting the 6-foot-1, 230-pound talent. Among those were powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee and USC. Schools with a more regional profile like Appalachian State, Charlotte, Duke, NC State, North Carolina and South Carolina also tested the waters to guage Mayfield’s interest.
A four-star recruit according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, he is considered the eighth-ranked prospect in North Carolina and the No. 16 player nationally at the linebacker position.
Last fall, Mayfield led Lincolnton with 152 total tackles, 125 of which were on a solo basis. He also had six sacks, six forced fumbles and a fumble recovery.
