Outfielder Ryan Ward will make his first MLB start with the Los Angeles Dodgers since April during the series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Ward made his MLB debut on April 19 against the Colorado Rockies. He played in two MLB games with the Dodgers before Los Angeles optioned him back to Triple-A on April 21. Ward earned another MLB call-up on Friday after Teoscar Hernández went down with a Grade 1 left hamstring strain.

Ward is Starting in Left Field

The Dodgers added Ward to the starting lineup for Sunday’s game. He is starting in left field and will be batting seventh behind third baseman Max Muncy.

When Ward made his MLB debut on April 19, he started at first base. He was filling in for Freddie Freeman, who was on the paternity list for the birth of his daughter. This time, he is replacing Hernández in left field.

At the plate, Ward went 2-for-6 and hit an RBI across his two MLB games with the Dodgers. In Triple-A this season, Ward is slashing .254/.379/.418 with a .797 OPS and six home runs in 47 games.

Dodgers Chose to Call Up Ward Over Top Prospect, James Tibbs III

With Hernández out and a spot open in the outfield, the Dodgers could have called up their No. 10 overall prospect, James Tibbs III, for his MLB debut.

Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes explained that 28-year-old Ward’s experience is the reason Los Angeles called him up over 23-year-old Tibbs III.

“I think he’s performing great, obviously,” Gomes said of Tibbs, per The Athletic’s Katie Woo. “The numbers are fantastic. I just think Ward has done this for a while, and he’s certainly earned it. His numbers were nothing to scoff at in Triple A either, especially when you break out the (versus right-handed pitching) stuff.”

Ward will have a chance to prove calling him up was the right choice when he starts on Sunday.
