Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said his top four hitters in the lineup, Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo, Corbin Carroll and Gabriel Moreno, have been fairly consistent this season. It's the fifth-through-ninth hitters in the order that he feels have to get things going.

He was also asked prior to the Diamondbacks' Monday, June 29, game against the Giants if he had discussions with veteran players about reducing playing time if they don't produce.

"Not yet," Lovullo said. "But I'm going to continue to have one-on-one discussions with them, and I'm in the process of doing that with them right now."

Lovullo chose not to reveal the nature of those discussions for the sake of privacy.

"But we do need to play better. I'll leave it at that," Lovullo said.

Pfaadt in line to start Tuesday

Right-handed pitcher Brandon Pfaadt is with the Diamondbacks on their taxi squad, pending an official move to add him to the active roster in time to start Tuesday's game against the Giants.

Pfaadt was sent to Triple-A Reno on June 4 after opening up the season with the Diamondbacks in their starting rotation and then being moved to the bullpen. At Reno, Pfaadt was stretched out to prepare him for a starter role again and made three starts for the Aces.

"We knew it was a matter of time before he started to get on a little bit of a run, to get the reps that he needed and find himself back here in the big leagues," Lovullo said. "For right now, we can assume that he's going to be ready to fire here very, very soon for us.

"And he deserves that opportunity. He did what he was supposed to do. What has he done? He's filled up the zone, he's continuing to shape pitches the right way and attack the zone the right way."

Injury updates

The updates from Lovullo on Monday started with catcher James McCann, who will play five innings of a rehab game on Thursday, July 2. McCann is dealing with a strained right quad and is on the 10-day injured list.

Right-handed pitcher Michael Soroka is going to be starting bullpen sessions and more as soon as this Saturday, Lovullo said. Soroka is on the 15-day injured list with a left glute strain.

Right-handed pitcher Corbin Burnes, who was in the clubhouse on Monday, will get another round of imaging done on his surgically repaired elbow either the first or second week of July, Lovullo said.

Catcher Gabriel Moreno didn't play Sunday, though he pinch-hit at Tampa Bay, and was back behind the plate Monday against the Giants. Lovullo confirmed Moreno is dealing with a lower-body issue that limits him slightly.
