The Diamondbacks are optioning right-hander Brandon Pfaadt to Triple-A Reno, where the plan is for him to get stretched out again as a starting pitcher after an inconsistent run in the big leagues as a reliever.
The club also will place right-hander Taylor Clarke on the bereavement/family medical emergency list.
In their place, the Diamondbacks are recalling a pair of relievers, right-hander Kade Strowd and lefty Philip Abner.
Pfaadt heads to Reno despite being in the first year of a five-year, $45 million contract the club gave him prior to last season. (The deal did not kick in until 2026.) Pfaadt struggled last season, posting a 5.25 ERA in 33 starts, then was bumped to the bullpen in favor of right-hander Michael Soroka earlier this season.
Pfaadt has logged just a 5.91 ERA in 10 relief appearances. The coaching staff had trouble finding consistent innings for him in long relief and had recently been giving him shorter outings, albeit with multiple days of rest between appearances.
Once stretched out again, Pfaadt will be rotation depth. The depth seems more important now that right-hander Corbin Burnes won’t be returning in July, as planned, after straining a muscle behind his shoulder as he worked his way back from last year’s elbow surgery.
Strowd, 28, was part of the return in the Blaze Alexander trade with the Baltimore Orioles in February. He was sent to Triple-A Reno after a spring in which he posted inconsistent results.
His results remained inconsistent in Reno, where he logged a 4.95 ERA in 20 innings, walking 16 and striking out 19. He had a 1.32 ERA through 13 appearances but has gone through a rough patch in recent weeks, giving up 12 runs (nine earned) in 6⅓ innings over the past few weeks.
This will be Abner’s second stint with the Diamondbacks this year. He threw 2⅓ innings in a relief appearance in Milwaukee at the end of April. He has a 5.12 ERA in 19⅓ innings with Reno.

At Chase Field: Nelson gave up five runs (four earned) in 5⅓ innings against the Mariners over the weekend, stopping a string of four consecutive quality starts. He served up four homers in the outing, doubling his previous career high. … He faced the Dodgers on March 27, giving up four runs in 4⅔ innings. … SS Mookie Betts has given Nelson trouble in his career, going 5 for 14 with a double and a homer, but DH Shohei Ohtani has not fared as well, going just 2 for 15 with a triple and five strikeouts. … Wrobleski is coming off a dominant start against the Phillies, whom he held to just one run on one hit in seven innings, walking none and striking out nine. … Wrobleski had a 1.50 ERA at the end of April but gave up 15 runs in 32⅔ innings in May. … He has started against the Diamondbacks once, in 2024, and was tagged for 10 runs in 5⅓ innings.
