Two regulars have Wednesday, May 20, off for the Diamondbacks in their series finale against the Giants: Corbin Carroll and Nolan Arenado.

Carroll, hit in the back of the head by a thrown ball at third base Tuesday night's game, told manager Torey Lovullo he feels good and wanted to play Wednesday. He never lost consciousness and finished the game, but Lovullo elected to take him out of the lineup for a break, with the team in the midst of 13 games in a row.

Carroll was likely available off the bench. Jorge Barrosa got the start in right field.

"I'm just glad that he went to bed, felt great, woke up today, felt great," Lovullo said. "We're monitoring him as we should. It's our responsibility. But he passed every test and all the protocols."

Carroll has reached base twice or more in eight straight games and is batting .423 in an ongoing eight-game hitting streak.

Arenado has a scheduled day off, as Lovullo sought to keep the veteran fresh. Arenado has reached base in 12 of his past 13 home games, batting .415. He is batting .330 over his past 32 games.

José Fernandez started at third base on Wednesday.

In other player news, left-handed reliever A.J. Puk threw 20 pitches to live hitters on Tuesday. His velocity was in the mid-90s, Lovullo said, and Puk is scheduled to pitch a simulated game on Saturday, May 23.
