It’s reviewed at 87% on rotten tomatoes with 151 reviews… and you’re making declaratory statements about what it is based off a couple of those lukewarm or bad reviews.

You won’t know unless you see it yourself. Declaring anything without doing so is just silly and smells like confirmation bias… without even confirming anything.

I'll see it if I hear good things from trusted people. I'm making no value judgments saying it IS bad; I think it looks bad. And why would I pay...a lot, these days...to go see a movie I think looks like it will be bad? Last time I did that I saw the truly putrid Gladiator II, hoping it would at least be good corny sword and sandal fun. It wasn't. The shrugging and "I'll go see it anyway" attitude is keeping a lot of bad movies/directors/writers/franchises afloat. I'm not one of them.

I get why you do so, for your craft and because it's your industry.

Complaints about DC being too dark have been prevalent since Zach Snyder (honestly since Batman v Superman). And yet, they go lighter and there still are complaints. This movie was bound to fail for some of you because it’s dammed if they do and dammed if they don’t.

A couple of reviewers have said they thought it was a bit crowded, and a couple have said it felt about right. It's a new world so Gunn is making it clear that there are many established heroes in this world. What most critics fear is that general audiences won't like the more comic-book feeling vibes from the film. A few have said, "If you love the comics, you'll love the film."

Maybe they welcome a return to "Superman." He is not a dark and brooding hero like Batman.

Some of the negative reviews are likely coming from people resistant to changing to a new actor and ditching HC as Supes. They need to get over their butthurt. This is now Gunn's DCU.

We'll go see it with open minds.

This. I have heard absolutely nobody I know interested in this film say, there are too many character aside from Superman. The loudest people I hear are Snyder fans. I know a bunch of them and they still won't shut up about the Snyderverse. My gosh. Move on. It sucked. It's over. Heck I still think replacing HC was unnecessary but willing to give this a shot because it's JG and I am still more of a DC fan than Marvel.

MetaCritic is a little more down to earth but fewer reviews:

I want to see it, and I have hopes it's decent to good. With that being said, RT has it at 96%, which seems inflated to me. Once they make their bank from Fandango, watch the score come back to life.

Yeah, I want to see it and I'm a Marvel > DC guy. I am optimistic.

Agree. Movies have leaned into the darkness as it's a common societal trend. But Superman has always transcended the darkness of society. That's really kinda his point. If you want people believing the good guys always win you have to present a legit really good guy that can always win.
I can see going dark with batman. It's his thing. But he and Superman are opposites on the hero scale.

I’m hoping Gunn pulled one over on us and the movie is nothing like the trailers. He knew it would be in every fast food commercial and get over saturated. On the flip side Snyder made great trailers and was a so so filmmaker.

right? establishing lots of heroes is just part of world building. Just so long as the movie focuses on Supes and the rest are mostly cameos. It establishes that the general public is comfortable with the idea of extraordinary heroes...but then Superman stands above all the rest.

Saw it. Loved it.
Definitely has James Gunn's imprints all over it, both the good and the bad. Nailed the optimism and hope that Superman himself is about. Nicholas Hoult as Lex was outstanding.

There are flaws and some controversial elements as there's heavy allusions to real world events that are probably going to be hard for some to overlook.

Top 5 superhero movie IMO. Some very serious moments some very funny ones all with the right amount of Superman cheesyness. Hope is definitely the message.

Green Lantern is awesome. The Jimmy Olsen stuff was funny, Mr Terrific started off like na but then yup.

My friends gave it a B+. It's mega goofy like a cartoon but craps so dark in the world that's fine.

My problem is my favorite superhero movies:

#1 The Dark Knight. Heath Ledger basically made me flee the theater when it was over.
#2. Spiderman 2. Alfred Moilina makes a very silly character very not silly and relatable. Takes the time to delve way into Peter Parker not just Spiderman. Aunt May is fantastic.
#3 Captain America: Winter Soldier The closest superhero movie to TDK. You feel the tension and the inevitability of the Winter Soldier. Robert Redford is perfectly cast as a villian that is unflustered at all times.
#4 The Crow - I wish I could place this higher. It's a constant reminder of how we were robbed of Brandon Lee yet also immortalizes him. He is just perfect as the Crow. Micheal Wilcott's Top Dollar isn't even a thing in the comics but he just eats up the screen.
#5 Iron Man. The starter of the MCU and just a tad better movie than Superman.

So you see these and the issue is all my favorite movies have shockingly good performances either as the hero or villian. This seems like none of that.

Welp, sleep study at the VA ended at 2am and I ain't getting back to sleep. Buuut...movie theater is open for 8:00am showing. So, WTF, I'll check it out to at least waste some time. If it's good and keeps me awake, great! If it isn't and puts me to sleep, great!
