OMAHA, Neb. — For the second time in the last three years, a Georgia baseball player is the winner of the Dick Howser Trophy for nation's top college player.
Catcher Daniel Jackson was named the recipient Friday morning, hours before the College World Series was set to begin.
Jackson was to be on hand to pose with the trophy, just like Georgia star Charlie Condon did two years ago. Jackson was named the winner first on the MLB Network.
Condon never played on Charles Schwab Field with the Bulldogs because his team lost in the third game of a super regional to N.C. State.
Jackson and the No. 3 national seed Bulldogs got Georgia back to the CWS for the first time since 2008 and open their play here Saturday at 8 p.m. against Texas.
Jackson’s accolades will certainly come up during the prime time broadcast on ESPN.
The junior, also a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award for top player, is on track to complete a triple crown in the SEC. He leads the conference with a .396 average, 31 homers and 86 RBI. He also is chasing a 30-30 season. He enters the College World Series with 26 steals.
“He’s a special player,” Georgia coach Wes Johnson said earlier this season. “You just don’t get those kind of athletes. A catcher that runs a 6.5 (60-yard dash) and hits like he hits and has the feel to steal bases and throws.”
The other finalists were UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, Louisville first baseman Tague Davis, UC Santa Barbara pitcher Jackson Flora and Arizona Stat outfielder Landon Hairston.
Jackson hit. 240 with 14 homers and 36 RBI and stole 12 bases in 2025 after transferring from Wofford.
“Last year, it was tough for me," Jackson said on the MLB Network. "I had to get acclimated. I came back in the fall this year and told myself I’m the man. It was all about belief and confidence.”
