The NHL Draft Lottery is today, and though the Boston Bruins made the playoffs, this event still matters.
At the 2025 trade deadline, the Bruins traded Brandon Carlo to the Toronto Maple Leafs. In exchange, the Bruins received Fraser Minten, a first-round pick, and a fourth-round pick (Vashek Blanar).
That first-round pick is on the line tonight. The pick was top five protected, and the Maple Leafs have the fifth-best odds at winning the draft lottery. The Bruins will only receive the Maple Leafs’ first-round pick this year if Toronto falls out of the top five. If not, they will get the pick in either 2027 or 2028 – the year is to be determined.
For the second year in a row, the drawing of the lottery balls will be televised so fans may follow along as the numbers are pulled. There will be two lotteries, first for the first-overall pick, then for the second-overall pick. Teams can move up no more than 10 spots.
The Bruins finished with the fifth-best lottery odds last year. They selected James Hagens at No. 7.
Bruins Draft Pick Odds
The Boston Bruins will select if the Maple Leafs’ pick falls out of the top five.
They have a 44.0% chance of selecting with the sixth-overall pick, which requires one team to win the lottery and jump ahead of the Maple Leafs.
They also have a 14.2% chance of selecting at seven for the second year in a row, which would require two teams to jump ahead of the Maple Leafs.
Maple Leafs Pick Scenarios
The Maple Leafs have an 8.5% chance of winning the lottery, and a 24.5% chance of holding onto the fifth overall pick.
If either of those happen, the Bruins will be owed an unprotected first-round pick to satisfy the 2025 trade. Whether that is in 2027 or 2028 will be determined by the Maple Leafs’ performance next season.
The Maple Leafs traded their 2027 first-round pick (top-10 protected) to the Philadelphia Flyers in the trade that sent Scott Laughton to Toronto, which is why the year is in question.
Here is how it plays out if the Maple Leafs keep their pick:
- If the Maple Leafs keep their pick this year and finish with a top-10 pick next season, they will choose to give their 2027 first-round pick to either the Bruins or the Flyers.
- If the Maple Leafs keep their pick this year and do not have a top-10 pick next season, the Bruins will get an unprotected 2028 first-round pick.
If the Maple Leafs slide down, much like the Bruins did last year, the Bruins will acquire the pick and select either sixth or seventh overall.
