Crystal Palace have agreed personal terms with defender Raphael Le Guen and will follow up with an offer in the coming days, according to L’Equipe.
The Eagles are reportedly about to send a bid to Brest for the 19-year-old centre-back. His former manager Eric Roy said, ‘He has great potential to work with.’
The Crystal Palace target made only six Ligue 1 appearances but still did enough to convince the South London club’s hierarchy of his potential and quality.
Palace will try to sign him as a replacement for Maxence Lacroix, who is on his way out of Selhurst Park for big money after two impressive seasons.
In his limited appearances, Le Guen won 80 percent of his aerial and 54% of his ground duels.
It remains unclear whether the addition of Le Guen will affect the pursuit of Chrislain Matsima, another target.
In reality, it shouldn’t. Palace lost Marc Guehi in January and never replaced him. Matsima should come in to fill that void.
After sorting their defence, the midfield is another area that demands immediate attention.
Cheick Doucoure has spent an extended period on the sidelines with injury, leaving the team without one of their most reliable ball-winners for much of the past 18 months.
Daichi Kamada’s departure has further reduced the club’s options, while uncertainty continues to surround Adam Wharton.
The England international is on the radar of several elite clubs, and they could pull the trigger before the window closes.
Even if Wharton stays, Palace are short on numbers and experience in the middle of the park.
Pierre Sage’s high-energy, transition-based system depends on athletic, technically secure midfielders capable of covering ground and controlling possession.
At present, the squad lacks the depth needed to cope with multiple competitions.
With the transfer window entering a crucial phase, Palace can no longer afford to wait. Reinforcements in midfield should be next on the agenda.
