The Boston Red Sox have been a bad offensive team for most of the season, but that's started to change lately.

The Red Sox have been heating up at the plate with 58 hits, 30 runs and seven homers over their last six games, showing signs of progress after scoring three runs or less in nine straight games. Even more impressively, they've managed to do it without two of their best hitters, Roman Anthony and Trevor Story.

Perhaps the team is finally getting acclimated to its new hitting coaches or simply finding its timing after a slow start. Either way, Craig Breslow is encouraged by what he's seen from Boston's hitters lately, especially against fastballs and in terms of plate discipline.

Craig Breslow fired Alex Cora and six coaches one month ago Tuesday. Has it made a difference?

“I certainly wouldn’t look back at our win-loss record over the last month and say it was this incredible success”

“I think the quality of the at-bats, particularly against fastballs, has really improved over the last month and that’s been a focal point,” Breslow told The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey (subscription required). “Also making sure we’re swinging at pitches over the heart of the plate, we’re not chasing, so some of those things are trending in the right direction, certainly still work to be done.”

To Breslow's point, there's been a clear improvement against fastballs since he dismissed Alex Cora and much of the coaching staff on April 25. Since the firings, the Red Sox have gone from hitting .244 against fastballs to .256, improving from 28th in the majors to 19th.

That's a good sign for Boston, which needs to keep progressing at the plate if it wants to turn its season around. The Red Sox have pitched well and played great defense so far, but their offensive struggles are a major reason why they're last in the AL East at 22-31.

Fortunately, there's still plenty of time for Boston's lineup to find its rhythm, especially with the weather getting warmer as the summer months arrive.
