News of the untimely death of Cowboys edge rusher Marshawn Kneeland shook both the organization and the larger football community on Thursday. Shock and sadness were the prevailing emotions as details of the 24-year-old's tragic passing emerged throughout the day.

Away from the facility on their bye week, many Cowboys players voiced sorrow at the sudden loss of their teammate. Dak Prescott shared his own unique perspective; his older brother Jace died by suicide in 2020 and prompted the quarterback to make suicide prevention awareness one of his core causes. Others across the league also reflected on Kneeland's passing, including former Cowboys linemate DeMarcus Lawrence- now with Seattle- and Dolphins wide receivers coach Robert Prince, who was on staff in Dallas when Kneeland was a rookie. Even former Baylor coach Matt Rhule took several minutes out of his own Cornhuskers press conference in Lincoln to deliver a message on the importance of checking in on those around us.

Fans at Thursday night's Raiders-Broncos tilt observed a pregame moment of silence for Kneeland, and the NFL has made available extra mental wellness professionals on top of existing resources already available to players and personnel. All this as fans are reacquainting themselves with Kneeland's remarkable journey to Dallas and his all-too-brief career and life.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis, please call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988 anytime, day or night, seven days a week, or visit the website at 988lifeline.org.
