BOSTON -- On Friday afternoon, the Boston Red Sox made the promotion of their top organizational prospect, shortstop Franklin Arias, to Triple-A Worcester official. As the 20-year-old gets one step closer to the big leagues, is it possible we see him in Boston as soon as this season? The idea may not be as far-fetched as you may think.
The promotion of Arias to Worcester was seen by many as well overdue, as the 20-year-old had dominated the level, ranking in the top three among all Eastern League players in batting average (.318, 2nd), on-base percentage (.407, 3rd), slugging percentage (.587, 2nd), OPS (.994, 1st) and home runs (19, 3rd) at the time of his promotion.
Whether it be Jeremy Pena, CJ Abrams, or Zach Neto, the Red Sox have been heavily linked to middle infielders ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline. However, given the talent all three have, paired with their multiple years of team control, none of them will come cheap in an extreme sellers' market ahead of the deadline, and any deal could include Baseball America's No. 3 prospect.
However, should Arias survive the deadline and continue to show his newfound power in Triple-A, while Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow strikes out in his pursuit of middle infield help, could the 20-year-old find himself manning either second base or shortstop in Boston?

Under Breslow, Boston has viewed Triple-A as more of a 'feeder team' for major league depth than a place for major developmental strides. Former top prospect Roman Anthony spent only 93 games with Worcester before his promotion to the majors, while Marcelo Mayer was at the level for only 43 games before he made his big league debut.
In 2026, the Red Sox front office has already promoted a player to the major leagues with zero games played in Worcester: left-handed pitcher Eduardo Rivera, who was promoted to Boston just one day after being elevated from Double-A Portland to Worcester.
Red Sox Senior Director of Player Development Brian Abraham spoke about how the Red Sox view Triple-A in regard to a potential Arias promotion on the Section 10 Podcast on June 16, saying, "We definitely see if you're in Triple-A, you should be prepared to be a big league call-up the next day."

"It doesn't always work out that way. There's still development opportunities in Triple-A... I think there's still opportunities for him [Arias] to get better. And it's easier to monitor that in Double-A versus Triple-A," he continued.
With nine days to go until the trade deadline, it remains to be seen where upgrades to the Boston lineup would come, if they come at all. And Arias would have to really hit the ground running in Triple-A to force the hand of Red Sox management, but the 20-year-old's major league debut is well within reach, and it just may come in 2026.
The Red Sox are 52-49 and in third place in the American League East.
