After being labeled expendable by Seattle Seahawks observers with his free agency looming, outside linebacker Boye Mafe has the opportunity to etch himself into the franchise’s history books in Super Bowl LX today.

Mafe presents the best matchup for Seattle against what might be the New England Patriots’ weakest link- the young, struggling, inexperienced left side of their offensive line. Both Patriots left tackle Will Campbell and left guard Jared Wilson are rookies, and despite each coming from blue-blood SEC powerhouses in college, have struggled down the stretch in the NFL. The playoffs have seen them especially overmatched. Their three playoff opponents- the Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans and Denver Broncos- all generated consistent pressure against this side. Many have praised those teams’ pass rush talent over Seattle’s, but the Seahawks had the deepest in the NFL this season. That gives them an advantage those others don’t in keeping them the freshest, concentrating the most effort from each of their pass rushers into every single play.

Enter Boye Mafe. He’s a 99th percentile athlete at his position who can decimate opposing protectors with speed. Expect him to do so to Campbell and Wilson at least a few times tonight. He might even match up with the big frame of right tackle Morgan Moses a few times, considering Moses’ biggest problems are the very areas where Mafe excels. Either way, with the free agency payday of a lifetime looming after the biggest game of his career, he won’t be quiet in the season finale.
