Fairfield's Mac Forehand became the first Connecticut-born athlete to medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics Tuesday, earning silver in the men's freestyle skiing Big Air competition.
Forehand earned his spot in Tuesday's final round after placing first in the qualifying stages, and he immediately announced his podium intentions on the championship stage, placing second overall on the first run with a score of 95.00, just .25 points behind eventual gold-medal winner Tormod Frostad.

Big Air winners are determined by the two highest scores earned during three total runs, and after repeating a 95.00 on his second go, Forehand earned a stunning 98.25 mark on his final leap, momentarily jumping into the gold medal position. However, Frostad once again managed to pip Forehand to the post, delivering a 98.50 on the competition's ultimate jump to recoup his spot atop the podium.
Forehand was born in Norwalk and was raised in nearby Fairfield until the age of 14, when he moved to the town of Winhall in eastern Vermont along with his family. Inspired to ski by his sister, Savannah, Forehand began competing on the World cup circuit just three years later, winning the Slopestyle World Cup in his debut season.
Now 24 years old, Forehand has consistently excelled in Big Air, earning a gold medal in the 2023 and 2026 Winter X Games in Aspen in the event. He also finished with a silver medal at the 2025 World Championships in Slopestyle.
Forehand previously competed in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, where he finished 11th in Big Air and 20th in slopestyle, with Tuesday's performance marking his first career Olympic medal. He participated in the qualification process for this year's slopestyle competition, but did not reach the final round.
