Area athletes — or even former athletes — now have a chance to relive their glory days with the formation of a new City of Ada Adult Wiffle Ball League.
If this had come along five years ago (well, maybe 10), I might have dusted off the Nikes and thrown out my back trying to play a game I grew up on.
Not to brag, but I used to have a mean wiffle curveball and changeup. It helped if the wind was blowing. But I digress.
Registration for the City of Ada league is underway and continues through July 6.
“It’s something else we can add for the adults to do,” said City of Ada Recreation assistant Cebern Young.
City officials have toyed with the idea for several months.
“After we kicked it around in the office, we asked some of our coaches and parents about it, and they seemed pretty interested. The initial interest seems to be there,” Young said.
The timing works out well. Parts of the Ada Sports Complex are under construction, but because of the small amount of space needed for wiffle ball, the league can begin without any interference.
“We’ll just need the infield for wiffle ball,” Young said.
Some of the rules include:
– Teams will consist of four to six players, with any combination of males and females.
– Four defensive players will be on the field during each at-bat.
– Games will play five innings with a 50-minute time limit.
– Games will play Mondays and possibly Tuesdays.
The strike zone will be determined by a target placed near the backstop.
“If you hit it, it’s a strike, and if you miss it, it’s a ball,” Young said.
Another rule is that pegging is legal below the neck. That brings back some not-so-fond memories from my playing days. Ouch.
“It’s like kickball. If you hit the ball and I field it, I can throw it at you, and if I hit you below your neck before you get to first, you’re out,” Young said.
There will be one umpire, mostly to settle any controversies that might arise.
“We’ll have an umpire in the field — right behind the pitcher — kind of like they do for junior high fastpitch softball, where they can see everything,” Young said.
Unbeknownst to me (I might have missed out on a new career!), there is a professional wiffleball league, and City of Ada Recreation officials borrowed some rules from that organization while adding a few of their own.
The league is limited to eight teams, so players are encouraged to sign up and pay the $45 entry fee as soon as possible.
Young said the City of Ada Recreation Department may start a kickball league in the not-too-distant future.
“Maybe try a kickball league sometime on down the road. We wanted to start out kind of small, but we’re hoping it grows. So we’ll see,” Young said.
Time to dig out those Nikes, guys and gals.
