Brody Thompson is a leadoff hitter, and he did leadoff hitter things on Friday.

The center fielder had two hits, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases as the Tupelo 49ers trounced Ada (Okla.) 7-1 in the second round of the American Legion Mid-South Regional at Sims Park in Gastonia, North Carolina.

For the second straight day, Tupelo got off to a fast start offensively, and it began with Thompson’s ground-rule double to lead off the game. He scored on Jonas Coleman’s infield single, and the Niners added another run for a quick 2-0 advantage.

“He smoked that ball to start the game, and that just set the tone for us the rest of the way,” Tupelo head coach Russell Bunch said. “When he leads off a game like that, it’s real easy to hit behind him.”

In the second inning, Thompson singled, stole second, advance to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a balk. The 49ers (22-4-1) added another run in the third on Kadin Bennett’s RBI double to make it 4-0.

That was more than enough run support for the pitching. After starter Aidan Strong tossed two shutout innings, Jax Coker brought it home with five innings of work. Coker allowed one run on three hits, struck out five and walked two.

Bennett’s RBI single in the fifth made it 5-0, and then Ada scored its lone run in the bottom half. Tupelo capped the scoring in the sixth on a two-run double by Wyatt McDaniels.

The Niners finished with seven hits and five stolen bases. Ada had four hits – three of them by Reese Littlefield, who drove in the Braves’ only run. Three Ada pitchers issued a total of nine walks.

“We’ve been really good on the bases this weekend, and I really like the way we’re playing,” Bunch said. “We’re really aggressive right now, and I want to keep it rolling.”

Tupelo’s next game will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against either Bryant (Ark.) or Daphne (Ala.). Ada (21-8-1) is eliminated from the tournament, having lost to Daphne on Friday.
