Between now and training camp, we will be going through the Indianapolis Colts' full 90-man roster, previewing each player.

Up next is tight end Carson Towt, who wears No. 45.

  • NFL experience: Rookie
  • College Notre Dame

What to know about Colts' TE Carson Towt

Towt did not play college football, but instead was a basketball player. He played for Notre Dame during the 2025 season. Before Notre Dame, Towt played for Northern Arizona.

Towt has never played football before, not even at the high school level, but believes the "dirty work" he did in basketball can help him with the transition, according to The Athletic's James Boyd.

With the Irish, Towt averaged 5.9 points per game, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists last season.

Towt signed with the Colts prior to the NFL draft. He was not draft-eligible due to his college football eligibility expiring last year.

Looking ahead to 2026 for Carson Towt

There is a learning curve for every rookie when making the jump from college to the NFL, but one would think that Towt's will be quite steep, not having played college football.

That will limit his ceiling as a rookie, particularly at a position where roles and spots on the depth chart are fairly well established. The Colts likely look to keep Towt on the practice squad, where he can have a redshirt year and develop as a football player.

This addition is the Colts taking a swing on Towt's size and athleticism.

We've seen other instances of GM Chris Ballard bringing in players who played other sports, most notably, Mo Alie-Cox, who will be in the tight end room with Towt.
