WESTFIELD – After missing the last two practices with a groin injury, Colts head coach Shane Steichen offered a positive update on Josh Downs’ return to the field Sunday.
“Downs ain’t serious at all. He might practice Tuesday,” Steichen said. “Nothing serious there.”
The fourth-year receiver was the fourth Colts wideout to miss time during training camp, joining No. 1 receiver Alec Pierce, who has missed all nine practices of training camp while on the physically unable to perform list as he rehabs a surgically-repaired ankle, and Laquon Treadwell, who has missed the last three practices with a hamstring injury, and Eli Pancol, who missed a couple days during the first week of camp with an undisclosed injury.
Pierce, Downs and Treadwell were absent from the Colts’ back-to-back weekend practices, leading to three-receiver sets with the first-team offense to frequently feature Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Ashton Dulin and Anthony Gould – who together combined for 18 catches in the NFL in 2025.
Steichen also cautioned extreme worry over cornerback Justin Walley’s absence during all the Colts’ team reps in Sunday’s practice. The second-year slot corner warmed up like normal but then tweaked a hamstring, Steichen said. He remained on the sideline throughout practice with helmet in hand but was not seen taking part in a majority of the action. Walley missed all of his rookie season in 2025 with a torn ACL he injured during training camp.
“We’re just monitoring him, too,” Steichen said. “He had a little thing in practice. It wasn’t anything bad, but we just wanted to be smart with him today, and he just went in individual.”
Including Walley, the Colts have five players nursing hamstring injuries – Treadwell, running back DJ Giddens, safety Hunter Wohler and linebacker CJ Allen are the others. Outside Downs and Pierce, the rest of the Colts roster participated in Sunday’s practice as the team looks ahead to a joint practice Tuesday at New England with the Patriots. Indianapolis plays its first preseason game Thursday night at the Patriots.
