Just a few months after its own April Fool's Joke, complete with a fabricated press release, Cleveland's expansion WNBA team appears to be teasing its new nickname, or at least leading fans to believe it isn't beholden to spoiler alerts.
The tease is not suggesting the team's nickname will be the Rockers, the original Cleveland WNBA team from more than 20 years ago. Or the Ohio Wolverines, the April Fool's joke from a few months ago.
This one is leaning into Greek mythology.
The Cleveland Sirens, anybody?
It might be the direction the franchise is going. That's if a mysterious sandcastle that appeared July 31 at Edgewater Park in Cleveland with the words "Hear The Call" in blue coloring is to be believed.
But it's now Aug. 1, so maybe the franchise is gifting us the new tradition of August Fool's Day to partner with our usual heat, humidity, summer colds and the start of football. If this is misdirection created by an organization attempting to get attention, why not float a nickname possibility with a connection to "The Odyssey" while Christopher Nolan's epic film is in movie theaters?
Either way, the Cleveland WNBA team, Cavaliers and Cleveland Monsters social media accounts responded to photographer Gabe Wasylko's images of "Hear the Call" posted on Instagram on Aug. 1. The teams' marketing people are apparently having fun with this.
The Rock Entertainment Group, which owns the Cleveland WNBA team and sent out the April Fool's Day news release earlier this year, is expected to unveil the team's nickname on Tuesday, Aug. 4. The organization has invited media to Rocket Arena for "a special announcement" at 10 a.m. the same day.
Northeast Ohio basketball fans have been speculating about the expansion team's nickname ever since the city was awarded a franchise last year. Cleveland's former WNBA team was the Rockers, who played seven seasons (1997-2003).
In Greek mythology, Sirens are female humanlike beings who live on islands and are typically described as having wings like birds.
The folklore dates back more than 2,000 years, with sailors at sea said to hear enchanting voices, luring them into the Sirens' traps. According to legend, sailors were susceptible to being mesmerized by the Sirens' beauty and voices.
Sirens are known to be dangerous, clever creatures — traits future Cleveland WNBA players could find useful as they try to become a championship threat someday.
But will the Cleveland Sirens really be the nickname of the team for which they play? Well, stay tuned.
