Ahead of the Cleveland Guardians' 2023 Home Opener, hometown hero Travis Kelce took the mound to throw out the first pitch. He spiked the ball into the dirt so hard that Shane Biber, who was supposed to catch it, had to jump back to avoid being hit.
This was a fun moment for the Cleveland native to share on the field of the baseball team he grew up cheering for. At the time, no one could have foreseen that Kelce would eventually become a part-owner of the franchise, until this week.
The Guardians announced on Wednesday morning that Kelce joined the Guardians as a minority investor.
"It's a dream come true for a Cleveland kid. Any Cleveland kid would be through the roof right now, and I'm happy to be the honorable one to get to do it for us, man," said Kelce on his Podcast New Heights.
"I can't thank the Dolan family enough. David Blitzer, these guys, you know, gave me the opportunity to show my Cleveland love and play my roots in Cleveland forever, no matter what. It's an awesome feeling knowing that a childhood kid that grew up on the East Side is now, you know, part owner of his favorite baseball team."

Now that Kelce is a part-owner of the Guardians, what's the first thing he wants to do with his new team?
Well, Kelce admitted on his podcast that he wants to redeem that ugly first pitch from three years ago.
"I'm probably just gonna maybe try and throw out a [explitive] respectable first pitch," continued Kelce. "I know I'm gonna be at the game on June 14 versus the Detroit Tigers. Try and redeem myself in front of my Cleveland roots."
With Bieber no longer on the roster, who will get the honor, or imposition, of catching a ball from Kelce, and will they be fully geared up?
We'll have to wait and see to get that answer.
Looking back at the Guardians' big-league roster, it isn't entirely clear exactly what type of financial impact it could have on the organization. The Dolan Family still owns the majority stake in the franchise, with David Blitzer being next in line in that pecking order.
When manager Stephen Vogt, who is originally from the Bat Area, was indirectly asked about the news, he answered with some tongue in cheek
Cleveland's skipper's response was simply, "I'm still a little bit bitter because the Chiefs beat the 49ers twice in the Super Bowl. Outside of that it's pretty cool to have Kelce on board."
As Kelce said multiple times, having a hometown hero on board and invested in the Guardians is certainly a cool story for him and the city.
