Jun. 24—FREEMAN, S.D. — The Scotland/Menno/Freeman/Canistota Post 152 79ers have put together an impressive start to the American Legion Class B baseball season, compiling a 9-6 record through their first 15 games while winning six of their last eight contests.

Although the 79ers saw a four-game winning streak come to an end with a 4-1 loss to the Platte/Geddes WhiteCaps on Tuesday, June 23, the squad has shown over the past several weeks that it has the talent and depth to compete with some of the top teams on its schedule.

The recent stretch of success began with back-to-back dominant performances, as Post 152 rolled to identical 13-0 victories over Alexandria and Elkton-Lake Benton. The win over Alexandria was particularly noteworthy, as Alexandria currently owns a solid 6-2 Legion record this summer.

The 79ers continued their winning ways by defeating Parkston 6-2. Parkston currently holds an impressive 11-3 record as of June 24, making the victory another quality result for Scotland/Menno/Freeman/Canistota. The winning streak concluded with a 5-2 triumph over Lennox before the Platte/Geddes WhiteCaps snapped the run on Tuesday.

A major reason for the team's strong start has been a productive offense led by several hitters who have consistently delivered at the plate. Easton Tschetter has been one of the most dangerous bats in the lineup, leading the team with a .524 batting average and an outstanding .697 on-base percentage. Tayden Kerrigan has also been a key contributor, batting .429 with a .515 OBP while pacing the squad with 13 RBIs.

Tannen Auch has added another steady presence in the lineup, posting a .381 batting average and .536 OBP. Kory Keppen has supplied production throughout the order with a .316 batting average, nine runs scored and seven RBIs. Riley Tschetter has also made his mark offensively, leading the team with 13 runs scored while adding nine RBIs, three triples and a .442 OBP.

The success at the plate has been complemented by a strong pitching staff that has emerged as one of the team's biggest strengths. Riley Gall has carried the heaviest workload, logging 22 2/3 innings with 18 strikeouts, a 1.54 earned-run average and a 1.19 WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched). Trent Guthmiller has been equally valuable, posting a 3-1 record with 23 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings of work while maintaining a 3.36 ERA.

Riley Tschetter has been dominant in limited appearances, striking out a team-best 24 batters in just 11 innings while compiling a 2-0 record and 3.18 ERA. Keppen has been nearly untouchable on the mound, throwing 10 scoreless innings with 10 strikeouts, only four hits allowed and a stellar 0.60 WHIP. With balanced production throughout the lineup and a reliable pitching staff leading the way, the 79ers have positioned themselves well entering the middle portion of the summer schedule.

Scotland/Menno/Freeman/Canistota (9-6) will look to continue building on its strong start when it hosts Colton Legion Post 206 at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, in Freeman.
