Jul. 8—WINNER, S.D. — After hitting a rough patch earlier this summer, the Winner/Colome Post 169 Class B American Legion baseball team appears to be finding its stride at the perfect time.
Winner/Colome has won six of its last eight games to improve to 8-6 on the season, using a balance of timely hitting and quality pitching to build momentum heading into the final stretch of the regular season. The recent surge includes a pair of revenge victories over teams that handed Winner/Colome decisive losses earlier this summer.
The latest came on Tuesday, July 7, when Winner/Colome rolled to an 11-1 victory over Platte/Geddes, snapping the WhiteCaps' three-game winning streak. The win also answered a 14-4 loss to Platte/Geddes on June 15, showing just how much the team has progressed over the past several weeks.
Winner/Colome controlled the game from the jump, out-hitting Platte/Geddes 12-2 in the five-inning contest on Tuesday. Carter Foster delivered one of his strongest outings of the season on the mound, working all five innings to earn the pitching win. The right-hander allowed just one run on two hits while issuing one walk and striking out four batters.
Offensively, Dylan Brandis powered the lineup by going 3-for-4 with four RBIs, while Quincy Phillips continued his ways at the plate by finishing 3-for-3 with two RBIs and four runs scored. Carter McKenzie added two hits and crossed the plate three times as Winner/Colome consistently put pressure on the WhiteCaps' defense.
The victory came after another impressive performance, a 10-4 win over Gregory. That result served as redemption after Gregory defeated Winner/Colome 12-8 on June 17, giving the squad consecutive payback victories against teams that had previously gotten the better of them.
While the recent success has been fueled by strong all-around play, several players have emerged as the foundation of Winner/Colome's lineup throughout the season. McKenzie has paced the offense with a team-best .459 batting average and a staggering .643 on-base percentage. He has added one home run, nine RBIs, 18 walks and a team-leading 25 runs scored at the top of the order.
Camdyn Anderson has been equally productive, batting .458 while leading the team with 23 RBIs. Anderson has scored 14 runs and has yet to strike out in 54 plate appearances. Phillips has rounded out one of the area's most productive trios, batting .448 with a .590 OBP while contributing 10 RBIs and 14 runs scored.
The pitching staff has been just as crucial in Winner/Colome's turnaround. Adryan Brandis owns a perfect 4-0 record with a 2.47 earned-run average, allowing just 13 hits over 22 2/3 innings of work while striking out 28 batters. Dylan Brandis has provided another dominant arm, recording a team-high 32 strikeouts across 21 2/3 innings while issuing just 15 walks, the fewest among the team's primary pitchers. Foster has also become a dependable option, posting a 2-1 record with 27 strikeouts in 20 1/3 innings while carrying a team-best 1.82 WHIP.
But before turning its attention to the postseason, Winner/Colome will look to keep its hot streak alive when it travels to Chamberlain for a 7 p.m. matchup on Monday, July 13.
