The Wisconsin Badgers rowing program gained more international recognition this week as former lightweight standout Claire Friedlander was named to the U.S. team for the 2026 World Championships in Amsterdam.
Friedlander will compete in the lightweight women’s single sculls from August 24 to 30, putting another Badger in the global spotlight.
The Philadelphia native earned her place by winning the lightweight women’s single sculls trial at Mercer Lake in New Jersey with a time of 7:51.81. This win was important because it returned her to an event where Wisconsin fans already knew her as a reliable and accomplished member of the team from 2019 to 2023.
Friedlander also has international experience from the 2022 World Rowing Under-23 Championships in Varese, Italy. During her time at Wisconsin, she earned Academic All-Big Ten honors in 2021 and helped the lightweight team win first place at the IRA Championships.
What she was able to accomplish in Madison goes beyond recognition; she’s helped put and keep Wisconsin on the map in this growing sport.
The main takeaway for Wisconsin is clear: programs build their reputations through the achievements of individual athletes. Friedlander is the kind of former Badger who keeps that reputation strong after graduation. If she performs well at the World Championships, it will add to a resume that already shows how far Wisconsin rowers can go.
