CONNEAUT — It took a little bit of time, but once Conneaut senior Alexis Kiser got comfortable, she took over the game and led the Spartans to a 53-26 win over the visiting Lakeside Dragons.
Conneaut earned its first win of the season in improving to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division. Lakeside fell to 0-6 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
Kiser led the Spartans with 22 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help Conneaut pull away in the second half.
“I think when they started first going to me hard, I was a little uncomfortable, but then once the comfort came, I think that’s where I started getting to a rhythm and my game,” Kiser said.
“If I get into a rhythm offensively, once they start guarding up on me, I get to hit my shooters, get to hit my people who are on the opposite block, and vice versa.”
Sophomore Allison Harmon was the beneficiary of some of Kiser’s passes and added 13 points, including three 3-pointers.
“Just looking at Kiser knowing what Kiser was looking for, just working it as a team,” Harmon said when asked what was going well offensively.
Lakeside hung with the Spartans through the first half. The game was tied at 14-14 midway through the second quarter.
It was at that time Conneaut shifted into a full-court press, and it sparked the Spartans into a higher intensity defensive effort.
“We had to pick up the pace defensively and apply some pressure and create some turnovers, which helped us get us some things going on the offensive end,” Spartans coach Nicole Grimmett said.
The coach was pleased her team posted the first win of the season.
Junior Alexis Warner did not play in the game against Lakeside in order to rest and help her get back to full strength.
“[Kiser] didn’t have her buddy Warner out there with her, so she had to change her game up a little bit, but she took control and did a good job for us,” Grimmett said.
Conneaut ended the second quarter with a 7-3 run to lead 21-17 at halftime. With the defense in high gear, the Spartans dominated the third quarter and built a 39-21 lead.
Lakeside was led by sophomore Elyzah Maunus with 12 points. Senior Amiah Brown added six points.
Coach Julie Taylor said the Dragons played well for about three quarters of the game.
“We were intense, and we were playing our defensive game and our plan that we had, and then we stopped,” Taylor said. “Once we got away from our game plan, is when we started going downhill.”
She said the team missed key starters and played mostly freshmen and sophomores against Conneaut.
“They’ve never experienced this type of ball game, and then, my best senior post player got in foul trouble in the first quarter,” Taylor said.
Conneaut shot 21-for-51 (36.21%) from the field and 6 of 10 (60%) from the charity stripe. Lakeside made nine shots out of 41 (21.95%) and shot 6-for-21 (28.57%) from the free-throw line.
Both teams play home games Tuesday.
Conneaut goes against Edgewood, while Lakeside takes on Geneva.
