A couple of Charleston fishing teams will have hefty tax bills coming up after finishing first and third in the 53rd White Marlin Open that was fished Aug. 3-8 in Ocean City, Md. The The six-day tournament began with 334 boats competing for an estimated $9.9 million in prize money, and the Charleston boats Mister Pete and Bull Pen will be taking home more than half of the overall purse.
Mister Pete caught an 80-pound white marlin on Aug. 6 and held on to take the top spot and $3,503,891.54. Bill Sharpe of Mount Pleasant was the angler for Mister Pete, a 60-foot Spencer owned by Mister Pete LLC and captained by Alan Neiford.
Bull Pen, a 62-foot Bayliss owned by Todd Wigfield and captained by Cordes Lucas, finished third in the white marlin division but earned more than five times that of the runner-up boat because of the divisions entered in the tournament. Bull Pen's 70-pound catch on Aug. 5 by James Hood was worth $1,818,546.84. The second-place boat, Reel Hunter, a 58-foot Viking out of St. Michaels, Md., caught a 71.5-pound white marlin on Aug. 7 that netted the team $360,721.49.
Two other teams walked away with $1 million plus paydays for winning their divisions. MaxBet, a 66-foot Spencer out of Ocean City, Md., caught a 607.5-pound blue marlin that paid $1,271,797.04, and Gray Fox, a 74-foot Viking out of Mantoloking, N.J., took home $1,018,653.29 with a 179-pound tuna.
A year ago a Charleston angler received notoriety in the White Marlin Open for reeling in the second-place fish aboard Michael Jordan's Catch 23. Trey "Cricket" McMillan, a longtime charter captain from Charleston and the founder of Lowcountry Oyster Company, was the man on the rod for a 71-pound white marlin that earned Catch 23 $389,377.11. The boat Billfisher won with a 72-pound catch worth $3,914,197.80.
