Going into this season, the Boston Red Sox's starting rotation seemed like it was going to be one of the strongest units in all of baseball.

Boston was bringing back Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet and Brayan Bello along with at least one of their talented young hurlers, then further bolstered its rotation by adding Sonny Gray and Ranger Suárez in the offseason.

Unfortunately, this season has not gone the way the Red Sox hoped. Though Connelly Early and Payton Tolle have emerged as impressive standouts, Bello faced a massive regression and was sent down to the minor leagues. On top of that, Crochet hasn't pitched since April 25 while dealing with left shoulder inflammation.

The 26-year-old ace will be out for even longer after he suffered a low-grade lat strain recently, which forced a shutdown of his throwing program. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy revealed that the team plans to reassess Crochet at the end of this week to determine how far along the left-handed hurler is in his recovery process.

“Not throwing a baseball. Just doing some light Plyo throwing,” Tracy said on Tuesday, per MassLive's Christopher Smith. “They’re gonna reassess him at the end of the week and see where we’re at with that.”

Though there's no timetable for Crochet's return at the moment, the two-time All-Star believes it would be a huge leap if he were able to make a return before the All-Star Game, which is just under a month away.

“I wouldn’t imagine so,” Crochet said, per Smith. “What’s today, June 12? And I haven’t had a ball in my hand in two or three weeks? I think it would take a huge leap to say I’d be back before then. If I hadn’t injured my lat as well, I’d say yeah, it’s possible. I think that would be really rushing it.”

Despite Crochet struggling early on this season, posting a 6.30 ERA across six starts, his return will instantly bolster the Red Sox's starting rotation, which is something the team could use down the stretch if they want a chance to return to the postseason this year.
