BOSTON — The Red Sox know that if they want to truly vault into contention in the second half of the season, they’ll have to get big contributions from many of their key players who are on the injured list. On Friday — as play resumed following the four-day All-Star break — interim manager Chad Tracy offered updates on all 11 of the players who are currently on the injured list.
According to Tracy, starters Ranger Suarez (groin strain) and Connelly Early (posterior elbow inflammation) have made significant progress toward returning while stars Roman Anthony (ligament tear in hand) and Garrett Crochet (shoulder fatigue) are still not close to returning. Here are all the updates:
*** Suarez, who missed his final start before the break after straining his groin during a start in Anaheim on July 5, is expected back soon. He’s eligible to return from the 15-day IL on Tuesday and there’s a chance he will start that day against Baltimore, Tracy said. Suarez played catch during the break and was planning to throw again Friday.
“Ranger is doing much better,” Tracy said. “We’ll see how he is over these next couple days and decide if that’s going to be the day or if we need to give him a few more days before we pencil him back into the rotation.”
*** Early is back to throwing just over two weeks after he left a June 30 start with elbow soreness. Tests revealed nothing more than posterior irritation in his elbow and he could be back in short order, too.
“Connelly threw at the tail end of the break, which is good,” Tracy said. “He’s gonna throw 75 feet today, 90 feet tomorrow. We’ll just keep, as he increases distance, read and react to how he’s feeling. That’s a good sign.”
*** Both Anthony (who is in Fort Myers) and Crochet (in Boston) have not made much progress this week. Crochet landed on the IL with shoulder fatigue on April 29 and suffered a lat strain that halted his progress a month later. Anthony has been out since May 4, when he left a game in Detroit after hurting himself on a swing.
Crochet still isn’t throwing. Anthony is able to do defensive activities but doesn’t feel comfortable gripping a bat yet.
“Garrett, it’s the same. There’s no change,” Tracy said. “He’s still doing a lot of work to strengthen the rotator cuff so there’s no change as far as when he’s going to throw yet.
“Roman, status quo as of now. I know he’s feeling a little bit better but nothing imminent yet as far as him swinging.”
*** Infielders Marcelo Mayer and Isiah Kiner-Falefa — who are both dealing with the same injury, an unusual stress reaction in a forearm bone — were at Fenway Park on Friday and remain shut down from swinging. Both players have a check-up next week to see if they can start progressing toward a return.
“IKF and Celo are due for X-rays and to see a hand specialist next week, probably Monday or Tuesday,” Tracy said. “We’ll have a better idea of how they’re healing once they do that.”
***Trevor Story, who had surgery to repair a sports hernia on May 22, isn’t ready to go on a rehab assignment but could do so in the next few weeks. He continues to do all baseball activities in Boston.
“Doing everything hitting-wise, just increasing intensity of baseball activity with everything else as we go along,” Tracy said. “Still nothing imminent there as far as a rehab or anything like that.”
*** In Fort Myers, a few players with longer-term rehab processes are ramping up. Righty Johan Oviedo (flexor strain in elbow) will throw the first bullpen session of his progression next week. Tanner Houck (Tommy John surgery) is throwing off a mound twice a week. Kutter Crawford (forearm setback) is out to 100 feet on flat ground as he ramps up.
First baseman Triston Casas remains shut down after suffering a wrist injury while rehabbing from knee surgery he had last May.
