The Boston Red Sox sent Brayan Bello down to Triple-A after his struggles in the big leagues persisted.

Bello was struggling as a starter, posting a 10.35 ERA in eight starts and 35 2/3 innings as a starter. He had a 0.71 ERA in 25 1/3 innings as a bulk pitcher. He had 22 strikeouts as both a starter and reliever in the big leagues, but issued 21 walks as a starter, compared to just three out of the bullpen. The Red Sox want him to start games, and sent him down to work on some things.

In his first Triple-A start of the season, he went four innings with five strikeouts and no walks. He allowed two earned runs, and there were some positives to take away from the outing. The Red Sox want him to keep improving, and Chad Tracy revealed a new plan for Bello in between starts.

The Red Sox want Bello on the mound more often, so they will have him do just that in between starts in Triple-A.

"Touching the mound even if it’s just for drill work and continuing to work on that offspeed arsenal and keeping that in the zone and in play at all times,” Tracy said, per MassLive's Christopher Smith. “And we’ll get ready for the next one."

"Even if you touch the mound for like five or 10 pitches or whatever,” Tracy added. “There’s things you can do to touch the mound more without overdoing it. Bello’s a worker, so he’s open-minded to that stuff. And we have two really good pitching coaches down there that are very aware of what was happening here. And now they’ve seen it and they’ll just keep pushing him.”

Bello had his best year as a big leaguer last season, and expectations were high for him this season. He has not lived up to those expectations so far, but the team is hoping he can iron things out. He had a 3.35 ERA last season and was a key player for the Red Sox.
