The day Boston Celtics fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. Star forward Jayson Tatum has officially been upgraded to questionable for Friday night's game against the Dallas Mavericks — almost 300 days after rupturing his Achilles during Game 4 of the 2025 Eastern Conference Semifinals.
If Tatum is able to go, it'll be his season debut and mark a miraculously quick recovery from such a devastating injury. The six-time All-Star made it clear months ago that he wanted to come back in front of the Boston faithful at TD Garden, and he'll have the chance to do so on Friday.
Unsurprisingly, the Celtics were the ones to break this major news. And while Tatum's status is still technically up in the air, it's worth noting that Boston has three road games in a row after it hosts Dallas. That means if Tatum doesn't suit up on Friday, he'll have to wait until Saturday, March 14th to take the parquet floor when the Celtics face the Washington Wizards at home.
In Tatum's absence, the Celtics have gone 41-21 and are in second place in the Eastern Conference. There's no denying their success without their go-to guy, but it doesn't mean they've been spotless. In fact, they just suffered their biggest loss of the season (29 points) to the Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night.
To truly reach championship contender status, the C's need Tatum. What he'll look like while returning from such a brutal injury remains to be seen, yet the fact that he's even questionable is a good sign on its own.
