The Atlanta Falcons are two days away from holding their first training camp practice under new head coach Kevin Stefanski. Even after a busy offseason in which the team made significant front office and coaching changes, expectations remain relatively low.
It's tough for national analysts to buy in when the Falcons have yet to name a starting quarterback. Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa will battle it out for the QB1 job, but many around the NFL are assuming it is Tagovailoa's job to lose.
The former Miami Dolphins QB is the healthier of the two and has a significant experience advantage. CBS Sports ranked the biggest offseason quarterback changes around the NFL and Tua came in at No. 3.
"When paired with Mike McDaniel, Tagovailoa looked like an efficient point guard for a high-powered passing attack," wrote Jordan Dajani. "Most of the time. His 44 wins were the most by a Dolphins quarterback since Dan Marino retired, and he led the NFL in passer rating in 2022, passing yards in 2023 and completion percentage in 2024. Then, last season happened. Tagovailoa threw a career-high 15 interceptions and averaged 6.9 yards per attempt, which was his worst mark with McDaniel."
If Tagovailoa wins the starting job, what kind of numbers should Falcons fans expect this season?
According to CBS Sports' projection, Tua will pass for 3,460 yards, 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. These numbers are right in line with Tagovailoa's career averages. The former No. 5 overall pick's best season came in 2023, when he passed for 4,624 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions for a passer rating of 101.1.
Tua had one of his least effective seasons in 2025, passing for 2,660 yards, 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 14 games. This led to his eventual release from the Dolphins during the offseason. We'll see if Tagovailoa can get his career back on track in Atlanta.
