After a productive stint in the NBA Summer League, Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Meleek Thomas solidified himself as one of the top players in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Thomas finished by averaging 27.3 points, 3.8 assists, 3.5 rebounds and two steals while shooting 43.8% from 3-point range in four appearances. He scored 20 or more points in each outing, including back-to-back 30-point performances.
The 19-year-old led all players in scoring average, placing just ahead of a trio of Washington Wizards players, including AJ Dybantsa. He totaled 85 points over his first three games, the most by any player to start a stint in the summer league.
Thomas debuted with the Cavaliers on July 10, recording 20 points, five rebounds and three assists. He followed with a 30-point performance on July 12 and a 35-point effort the following day, which tied rookie Caleb Wilson for the most in a game in Las Vegas this year.
The former Arkansas guard was projected as a first-round pick before falling to the Cavaliers at No. 34. He was highly touted for his scoring after converting a program-record 48.7% from beyond the arc in 18 SEC games, traits that have been on display this month.
Thomas, who signed a four-year contract with the Cavaliers on July 1, should have the opportunity to compete for rotation minutes next season. While his exact role is yet to be determined, Thomas believes he has plenty to offer the group.
