Cardinals among most obvious fits for Brendan Sorsby in NFL supplemental draft originally appeared on The Sporting News. Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here.
One of the wildest stories of the college football offseason is only getting wilder.
Brendan Sorsby was one of the most in-demand quarterbacks in the transfer portal. It didn't take long for the star quarterback to end up at Texas Tech, who has been giving out bags to players in every sport. However, news broke that Sorsby was involved in sports betting, including bets involving his own team, when he played for the Indiana Hoosiers.
Despite that, a Texas judge recently ruled that Sorsby would still be able to play immediately. This decision was met with massive uproar, and it now seems like the pressure has caused Sorsby to change his mind.
Now, Sorsby is giving up his remaining eligibility to enter the NFL supplemental draft. The supplemental draft hasn't had a player selected since Jalen Thompson in 2019, but the general consensus is that at least one team will bid on Sorsby.
Well, NFL Draft On SI's Justin Melo recently identified the most likely suitors, and the Arizona Cardinals made the list.
Will Cardinals select Sorsby in supplemental draft?
If a team wants to select a player in the supplemental draft, they have to give up a pick in the next year's draft. It's a blind auction process, and the rounds keep going until a team offers to use a certain pick on a player.
Considering Sorsby is thought of as a potential first-round talent, it's almost a certainty that a team will bid on him. Will it be the Cardinals, though?
Melo mentioned that the Cardinals currently have "the worst starting quarterback situation" in the NFL. The team and Jacoby Brissett are locked in a contract standoff and there's not much reason to be excited about Gardner Minshew or Carson Beck.
"The Cardinals drafted Carson Beck in the third round, but that shouldn't prevent them from considering alternative options," Melo explained. "Scouts largely agree Sorsby would have been selected significantly higher than Beck in the 2026 NFL Draft. The rebuilding Cardinals need a long-term answer."
As Melo mentioned, the Cardinals did just use a day two pick on Beck, but Sorsby is almost universally considered a better prospect. Plus, you have a better chance of hitting on a franchise quarterback the more shots you take.
No questioning Sorsby's talent, but other worries are real
Pretty much every talent evaluator would agree that Sorsby can be an NFL quarterback. At Cincinnati in 2025, Sorsby threw for 2,800 yards with 27 touchdowns and five interceptions. The passer also rushed for 580 yards and nine scores, showing off his dual-threat ability.
However, just because Sorsby is leaving the NCAA, that doesn't mean he's immune from consequences. How would players like Calvin Ridley and Jameson Williams, who were suspended by the NFL for betting, feel if Sorsby received no punishment for betting on his own team?
So, any team interested in Sorsby would have to be okay with losing a 2026 draft pick and probably losing Sorsby at some point to a suspension. In that case, the Cardinals make even more sense, because Minshew or Brissett are already in place as a bridge starter.
