Betting on Spain to not win its 2026 FIFA World Cup match against Cape Verde should have lost the bettor money.

After all, Spain was one of the best teams on the planet (No. 3 in the FIFA rankings) and one of the World Cup favorites going into its Group H matchup on Monday.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde, which has a population 82 times smaller than Spain, was playing its first World Cup matchup ever and was ranked No. 64 in the FIFA rankings.

But the impossible happened, as the Blue Sharks battled their powerhouse opponent to a 0-0 draw in a result that shocked the world.

Because of that result, a bettor who placed a wager on Spain to NOT win has cashed in big time.

According to Polymarket, a user named “fishalive” put down $400,000 on Spain to not earn a win against Cape Verde at nine-percent odds.

That bet netted the bettor a total return of $4.7 million.

Considering the two teams playing in the match, betting on Spain to not emerge victorious was a crazy bet in and of itself.

It gets even crazier when you consider the bettor placed the price of a house on it.

For the Blue Sharks, it was all about the defense.

Despite dominating possession throughout the contest, Spain just couldn’t crack the Blue Sharks’ unit.

When Spain finally did, 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha was standing in the way, shutting down Spain to the tune of seven saves.

Two of his best highlights were rejections on a shot from Ferran Torres and a header from Aymeric Laporte.

As a result of his impressive showing, Vozinha has now become an international superstar.

The Blue Sharks needed every bit of their defensive performance.

The Blue Sharks were only able to muster up one shot on goal and possessed the ball for 26% of the match.

To give an even better idea of just how unexpected this result was, Spain sported an expected goals number of 2.29, a full two points higher than Cape Verde’s.

The result between a huge underdog like Cape Verde and a heavy favorite like Spain on Monday was just another reminder of why we love the World Cup.
