I know little about NFL contracts, how they work and what happens when a cut player resigns. Kyler is getting cut. He’ll sign somewhere and play somewhere else. The Cardinals own him nearly $60 million. I assume he’ll get that because of his contract with the Cards. Will that amount owed by the Cardinals be reduced by the amount his new team offers up? Will the new team offer him a minimal contract with the Cards paying him to play there? How does this work?
The Cards will pay Kyler $36.8 million in 2026. Whatever contract he gets from his new team will offset against that money.

If Kyler wants, he can effectively choose his team and play for the $1.5M veteran minimum. The team signing Kyler would have to pay him over $36.8 million before he sees his first new dollar.

The Vikings are expected to release DT Jonathan Allen due to salary cap constraints, per sources.

The former Pro Bowler had 68 tackles and 3.5 sacks in 17 starts. The Vikings are $40-plus million over the cap and need to get under, thus the move.

Steelers are releasing tight end Jonnu Smith, per sources. The move will save the Steelers $7 million against the cap and Smith now will become an unrestricted free agent.

no...rarely is there offset language in a veteran players contract... Cards will owe him the remainder of whatever amount was guaranteed

The #Falcons are planning to release WR Darnell Mooney, sources say, with Mooney set to count $18.4M against the salary cap.

Mooney, still just 28, has averaged better than 13 yards per catch in each of the last three seasons.

ESPN sources: the Raiders are releasing last season’s starting quarterback Geno Smith, barring a trade before the start of the new league year. By releasing Smith, the Raiders will open up $8M in salary cap space while taking on $18.5M in dead money.

I totally get it, but Geno’s got an $18.5 million salary guarantee from Vegas. You could sign him for a $1.5 million salary this year. Maybe trade Brissett for a 5th and get someone in the draft or a Zach Wilson type.

I’d much rather pay Geno Smith $1.5MM than Malik Willis 10x that.

I’d rather watch a 5th round draft pick. Either way we are looking at 4 wins at best.

Geno was really bad last season

His throws were all over the place

Did others see different?
The coaching with Vegas was a catastrophe tho. Willing to give Geno some benefit of the doubt to raise the potential ceiling.

Jacoby Brissett is definitely taking us nowhere. Malik Willis is probably taking us nowhere.

The only positive to signing Geno is the money savings.

But... who would trade a 5th for Brissett when they could sign Smith for the veteran minimum? That would make sense if you think Brissett is significantly better than Smith, but then, since you've been advocating for the Cardinals to try to be competitive this year, why would you want them to go with a worse QB? This would only make sense in the context of tanking again to get the 5th round pick and a better draft position in 2027.

I think Smith has more legitimacy as a starter than Brissett does tho. Brissett can bridge to your rookie QB or until your injured starter comes back. Geno will challenge for a starting job.

It’s a small difference but I think a team can make an honest argument that Geno Smith gives you a chance to compete for the playoffs. You can’t say that with Brissett.

Fair, but then again, why would a team give up a 5th for Brissett @ $4M/yr when they could have Smith in FA for $1.5M?

Maybe the Jets would make that choice given that Smith probably doesn't want to go back there.

Ideally you’d sign Smith first.

So Raiders spent third-round pick, $58.5 million for 15 games with Geno Smith. Makes Cards look a tad bit better :)
